Sheriff’s Office

Community Services and DARE

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is concerned with its citizens’ personal safety and the safety of their property. In this regard, a number of crime prevention programs have been developed to reduce the potential for crimes against county residents.

The agency’s Community Services Unit is staffed by two deputies who are responsible for the creation and administration of crime prevention programs offered to the public. Deputies from the division are available to make public presentations for organizations and community groups throughout the county on a variety of topics. Programs include home security, community awareness, scams against the elderly, and child safety. The deputies also represent the Sheriff’s Office on various boards and committees within Shawnee County.

The Sheriff’s Office also offers the DARE curriculum to 6th grade students in 13 county schools. The 10 lessons presented equip the students with tools necessary to help them resist peer pressures to experiment with drugs, especially, tobacco, alcohol and marijuana. Students graduate from the 10-week course with a certificate, a DARE shirt and other mementos of their participation.

Deputy Daniel Lopez (785.368.2218) and Sergeant Jay Simecka (785.368.2217) are the County’s DARE officer.
