Shawnee County is proud to use the AccuVote 2000 precinct opti-scan tabulating voting machine which weighs approximately 15 pounds and comes with a handy carrying case. It sits inside a custom built locked ballot box on election day.
The voter marks a paper ballot and places it inside a secrecy sleeve. Leaving a few inches showing out the top of the sleeve, the voter gently slides it into the opening on the top of the AccuVote machine. A small motor drive pulls the ballot out of the sleeve and across the ballot reader path. After the machine reads and tabulates all the votes cast on the ballot, it deposits the ballot into the locked ballot box.
At the end of the night, the election board workers unlock a handy lower door on the ballot box and remove the ballots. Voted ballots are then stored and sealed in a ballot carrier box by the board workers before being returned to the election office.
When the AccuVote machine is brought back to the election office on election night, a numbered seal is broken and the pre-programmed memory card is removed. The results on each memory card are then uploaded into a central computer for tabulation and reporting of results.
The AccuVote 2000 will accept ballots which are 11”, 14” or 18” long. It will also accept ballots printed on many different paper colors.
