Board Worker Information

Qualifications:  Board Workers must be at least 18 years old and an American citizen.  Additional limitations apply for specific elections.  An oath or affirmation of office is required.

Applications:  Applications must be completed and returned to the Election Office.  If you are qualified, your name is added to a list (pool, K.S.A. 25-2804).  You will be contacted about a position and location that would work for you. 

Appointments:  Appointment letters are sent two weeks prior to the election. 

Training: Classes are usually held at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday the week before the election.  School schedules are mailed with the appointment letters.  It is necessary to have a knowledgeable election board.  If you cannot make it to the class shown on your schedule, you may substitute another class.  Training is paid at minimum wage and usually last two hours.

Compensation:  Full time positions are paid $100 for the entire day, part time positions are paid minimum wage for the hours worked.

Hours:  Election Day, Full Time, 6:00 a.m. to approximately 8:00 p.m.
either 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m OR 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Election Day:  Please bring a cellular phone if you can, any food, drinks or snacks that you will want and wear comfortable clothing (see Polling Place). 

The election board is responsible for all that occurs in their precinct during their appointment.  Board workers may not leave, although full time workers are allowed to go vote (see Voting).  You will be reimbursed for cell phone calls to the Election Office if they cause you to exceed your plan. 

Polling Place:  Some of these buildings provide luxuries such as kitchens and snack machines.  Other locations may not have air conditioning and some do not have heating.  Fans and space heaters are available from the Election Office.  No smoking is allowed at any voting place.  Please keep in mind, it may be necessary to place workers outside of the precinct where they live.

ADA:  All voting places are handicap accessible to voters and many meet ADA guidelines for board workers as well.  If you have a need for any special accommodations, please notify the Election Commissioner.  We will find a location that is accessible for you. 

Voting:  Full time election workers who work outside of the precinct in which they live, need to vote in advance.  Certain deadlines apply.  If advance voting is not possible, the Supervising Judge will schedule a time for the worker to travel to the home precinct to vote.

County Employee Information

Qualifications:  Board Workers must be registered voters.  Additional limitations apply for specific elections.  An oath or affirmation of office is required.  Please read the resolution on the back.

Applications:  Applications must be completed and returned to the Election Office.  If you are qualified, your name is added to a list (pool, K.S.A. 25-2804).  You will be contacted about a position and location that would work for you. 

Appointments:  Appointment letters are sent two weeks prior to the election. 

Training: Training classes will be set up for county employees on Friday before the election.  School schedules are mailed with the appointment letters.  It is necessary to have a knowledgeable election board.  If you cannot make it to the class shown on your schedule, you may substitute another class at any other location, including those held for the non-county election workers.  You are paid for attending Board School at your regular wage.

Compensation:  On election day, you will be paid for 8 hours of work at your regular wage.

Hours:  Election Day, AM Shift: 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m or PM Shift: 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
