Winter Weather Driving Safety

With a winter weather advisory being expected this evening through tomorrow, this could cause travel difficulties consisting of snow covered roads and limited visibility. During inclement weather, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office strongly discourages any non-essential travel. Please do not attempt to drive if you do not absolutely have to. If driving is absolutely necessary, ensure yourself safer travels by following these driving tips:

• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.

• Make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical working order.

• Slow down and increase distance between vehicles.

• Avoid quick braking or acceleration.

• Keep turn signals, brake lights, and windows clear of snow and ice.

• Never use cruise control.

• Buckle up and ensure that children are in proper child safety seats.

• Dress for conditions. Take a coat, hat, gloves, scarf, etc.

• Inform family members and friends of your route of travel.

Let’s make Topeka the Safest Capital City in America.
