Fatality Accident Update

On May 1st, 2019, around 10:00am, Shawnee County Sheriff deputies seized 87 pounds of Marijuana from a traffic stop on eastbound I-70 near MacVicar Ave. Two vehicles, a 2019 Dodge Caravan and a 2019 Nissan Armada, were involved in the traffic stop.

Preston G. Payne, 33, of Rossville, GA, and Ruth A. Sayger, 30, of Chattanooga, TN, were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the following charges:

Distribution of Hallucinogens

Use/Possession w/Intent to Use Drug Paraphernalia

The value of the marijuana is estimated to be around $175,000.

The Kansas Highway Patrol assisted with the traffic stop.

The incident is still under investigation.

Cherie L. Wasson, 52, of Berryton, was the fatality victim in the accident on SE 69th St. Her 11 year -old son was a passenger. He is still in a local hospital being treated for his injuries that are not considered life threatening.

On May 1, 2019 at 07:17 the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a call of a one vehicle injury accident in the 4700 block of SE 69th Street. Upon arrival emergency crews found a Subaru Legacy in the ditch on the south side of the road. The driver of the Subaru, an adult female, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The front seat passenger, a juvenile male, was injured and transported to a Topeka hospital by AMR with serious injuries.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is in the initial stages of the accident investigation. The vehicle was traveling westbound on SE 69th Street and lost control, sliding sideways for unknown reasons. The vehicle slid sideways into the ditch on the south side of the road, and struck a tree.

The names of the driver and passenger are being withheld at this time pending family notifications.

The Shawnee Heights Fire Department and AMR assisted at the scene.

This accident is still under investigation.
