DUI Saturation Patrol
On 05/16/19 at 3:28 am Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center was notified of a two vehicle accident in the westbound lanes of I-70 mile post 348, near West Union Rd.
When Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived on scene it was discovered that a Ford box truck and a Pontiac Firebird were travelling westbound. The Ford registered out of Missouri and the Pontiac registered out of Tennessee. The vehicles collided in the outside lane of travel sending both vehicles off the road to the north. The Pontiac became fully engulfed in flames with both occupants still inside.
The occupants of the Pontiac were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local hospital where he was evaluated and released.
Dover Fire and AMR assisted at the scene.
The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a DUI Saturation Patrol on Friday, May 17th from 10:00pm – 3:00am and Saturday, May 18th from 10:00pm – 3:00am. Five Officers will conduct the saturation patrol through a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
The purpose of the saturation patrol is to help ensure safe roadways for the citizens of Shawnee County by detecting and apprehending drunk drivers. Officers working in a saturation patrol target impaired drivers by observing moving violations such as speeding and aggressive and/or reckless driving.
